Indian Numerology Numbers 1-9: Planet, Mulank, Bhagyank

Indian numerology numbers run from 1 to 9, and each one is ruled by a planet of the Navagraha: 1 Sun (Surya), 2 Moon (Chandra), 3 Jupiter (Brihaspati), 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury (Budha), 6 Venus (Shukra), 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn (Shani) and 9 Mars (Mangala). Your Mulank comes from your birth day alone; your Bhagyank comes from your full date of birth.

That planetary link is what makes the Indian system, usually called Ank Jyotish, different from the Western numerology most websites describe. Western books built on Pythagorean numerology read numbers as personality archetypes and often use master numbers such as 11 and 22. Indian numerology keeps everything inside the nine-planet framework of Jyotisha (Vedic astrology), so the questions it answers are closer to astrology: which planet is strong in you, which weekday and colour support you, and whether your birth number and destiny number pull in the same direction. Indian numerology numbers and their ruling planets

The table below is the backbone of Ank Jyotish. Every number from 1 to 9 is assigned to one of the nine grahas, and most of the traditional associations (weekday, colour, gemstone) follow from the planet rather than from the number itself. Rahu and Ketu are the lunar nodes, not physical planets, and classical texts do not give them a weekday of their own; numerologists usually borrow Saturday for Rahu and Tuesday or Thursday for Ketu, so treat those two rows as convention rather than rule.

A word of caution on the last column. Gemstones are the most commercialised part of Indian numerology, and a strong stone such as Neelam is traditionally prescribed only after a full horoscope reading, not from a birth date alone. Knowing which stone belongs to your number is useful background; buying one because a chart told you to is a different decision.

Mulank: your birth number

Mulank (also written moolank, meaning "root number") is taken only from the day of the month you were born. The month and year are ignored. If you were born on a single-digit date, that digit is your Mulank. If the date has two digits, add them and keep adding until one digit remains.

• Born on the 7th: Mulank 7.
• Born on the 14th: 1 + 4 = 5, so Mulank 5.
• Born on the 29th: 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2, so Mulank 2.

Because only 31 dates exist, every Mulank maps to a fixed set of birthdays. This is the quickest way to check your number without any arithmetic.

Notice that Mulank 1 to 4 each have four possible dates while 5 to 9 have only three. That is simple calendar arithmetic, not a sign that some numbers are rarer or luckier. Also note that 11, 22 and 29 are reduced like any other date. Indian numerology does not treat 11 or 22 as master numbers the way Western numerology does, which is one of the clearest differences between the two systems.

Bhagyank: your destiny number

Bhagyank (from bhagya, fortune or destiny) uses the whole date of birth. Write the date as DD-MM-YYYY, add every digit, and reduce the total to one digit. Most Indian practitioners add the digits one by one; a few add the day, month and year as separate blocks first. Both routes give the same single digit, so use whichever you find easier.

The way the two numbers are read differs. Mulank describes how you behave day to day, your temperament and first reactions. Bhagyank describes the direction life keeps pushing you in, the kind of work and circumstances you grow into, and in many traditions it becomes more noticeable after the mid-thirties. That is why an Indian numerologist almost always asks for both before saying anything, and why a single-number reading from a birth day alone is only half the picture.

What each number means in Ank Jyotish

1 and the Sun

Surya gives Mulank 1 people a need to lead and to be seen. They tend to take charge, dislike being micromanaged and do well in management, government service and their own businesses. The shadow side is ego and difficulty taking advice.

2 and the Moon

Chandra makes 2 gentle, intuitive and moody in the way the Moon waxes and wanes. Twos are strong partners, carers and creative workers, but can overthink and depend too much on approval.

3 and Jupiter

Brihaspati is the guru among planets, so 3 is linked with learning, teaching, law, finance and advisory roles. Threes value discipline and respect; they can become rigid or preachy.

4 and Rahu

Rahu is a shadow graha tied to ambition, foreign connections, technology and sudden reversals. Fours often work hard for results that arrive unexpectedly, and are advised to be careful with speculation and shortcuts.

5 and Mercury

Budha rules speech, trade and quick calculation. Fives are adaptable, sociable and good at sales, media and anything with variety. Restlessness and scattered effort are the usual weaknesses.

6 and Venus

Shukra brings comfort, beauty, art and relationships. Sixes are drawn to design, hospitality, fashion and family life, and tend to be generous hosts. Indulgence is the trap.

7 and Ketu

Ketu is the detached, spiritual node. Sevens are researchers, healers and seekers who need time alone. They can seem distant and may struggle with material ambition.

8 and Saturn

Shani is the planet of karma, patience and slow reward. Eights often feel that success comes late but lasts. Numerologists in India are more cautious with 8 than with any other number, which is why so many people try to avoid it in mobile and vehicle numbers.

9 and Mars

Mangala gives energy, courage and a protective instinct. Nines suit the armed forces, police, sport, surgery and engineering. Anger and impatience are the classic warnings.

Reading Mulank and Bhagyank together

This is the part most calculator pages skip. Two people with Mulank 5 can live very different lives if one has Bhagyank 5 and the other has Bhagyank 8. Indian numerologists judge the pair by whether the two ruling planets are traditionally friendly, neutral or opposed. Friendships between grahas come from classical Jyotisha; the groupings below are the ones most commonly used in Ank Jyotish, though individual schools differ in detail.

How to use it: if your Mulank and Bhagyank planets are friends, your temperament and your life path support each other and people usually describe you as settled in your direction. If they are opposed, the reading is not "bad luck"; it usually means your natural style and the demands life puts on you do not match, so progress comes after you learn a second way of working. A Mulank 1 (Sun) with Bhagyank 8 (Saturn), for example, is often read as a natural leader whose recognition arrives late and only after long, patient effort. When Mulank and Bhagyank are the same number, that planet's traits are simply doubled.

Common mistakes when finding your numbers

• Using the wrong date. Use the date on your birth certificate. If you were born after midnight, the calendar date applies, even though a Hindu panchang day runs sunrise to sunrise; a few traditional numerologists prefer the sunrise rule, so ask which one your consultant uses.
• Stopping at a two-digit total. 32, 46 and 11 are not final numbers in the Indian system. Keep reducing.
• Mixing systems. A Mulank from Indian numerology read with a Western meaning for 4 or 7 gives confusing results, because those two numbers have different rulers.
• Treating the number as fate. Ank Jyotish is a traditional interpretive practice, not a science, and no chart can guarantee a job, a marriage or money.
