Numerology in Kannada: Numbers, Letters & Your Name
Key takeaways
- Numerology in Kannada uses the same numbers 1-9, written with Kannada numerals.
- Name numbers are calculated from the English spelling of your name with the Chaldean (Cheiro) chart.
- Spelling changes the result: Shwetha gives 2, Swetha gives 6.
- Katapayadi is a genuine historical letter-number code in Kannada script, used for astronomy and Carnatic ragas, not fortune-telling.
- Numerology is a tradition and belief system, not a scientific predictor.
Numerology in Kannada uses the same nine numbers as every other school, written ೧ to ೯ in Kannada numerals. Your birth, destiny and name numbers are normally worked out from your date of birth and the English spelling of your name with the Chaldean chart. Kannada script also carries its own historical letter-to-digit code, Katapayadi.
This guide gives you the Kannada numerals with their spoken names, the planet and weekday (vaara) traditionally linked to each number, a worked example for a Kannada name spelled two different ways, and the Katapayadi letter table written in Kannada script, with its rules and a Carnatic music example. Numerology is a cultural tradition and a belief system, not a science, so read everything below as a way to explore that tradition rather than as a forecast of your future.
Numerology in Kannada: the 1–9 reference table
Numerology is sometimes called sankhyashastra, the science of numbers, and its core is one simple table. Most people in Karnataka write dates and phone numbers with the familiar Hindu-Arabic digits today, but the native Kannada numerals are far from forgotten: the clock tower in Mysore still displays them on its face. Knowing them helps when you come across them in older documents.
In Indian numerology each number from 1 to 9 is traditionally tied to one of the Navagraha, the nine celestial bodies of Hindu astrology. Seven of the nine also rule a day of the week, which is why the Kannada weekday names are, in effect, planet names: Bhanu (a name of Surya, the Sun), Soma (the Moon), Mangala (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus) and Shani (Saturn), each followed by vaara, meaning day. Rahu and Ketu, the two shadow planets, have no weekday of their own.
| Number | Kannada numeral | Spoken (romanised) | Traditional planet (graha) | Kannada weekday (vaara) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ೧ | ondu | Surya (Sun) | ಭಾನುವಾರ Bhanu Vaara (Sunday) |
| 2 | ೨ | eraḍu | Chandra (Moon) | ಸೋಮವಾರ Soma Vaara (Monday) |
| 3 | ೩ | mūru | Guru / Brihaspati (Jupiter) | ಗುರುವಾರ Guru Vaara (Thursday) |
| 4 | ೪ | nālku | Rahu | No weekday |
| 5 | ೫ | aidu | Budha (Mercury) | ಬುಧವಾರ Budha Vaara (Wednesday) |
| 6 | ೬ | āru | Shukra (Venus) | ಶುಕ್ರವಾರ Shukra Vaara (Friday) |
| 7 | ೭ | ēḷu | Ketu | No weekday |
| 8 | ೮ | enṭu | Shani (Saturn) | ಶನಿವಾರ Shani Vaara (Saturday) |
| 9 | ೯ | oṃbattu | Mangala (Mars) | ಮಂಗಳವಾರ Mangala Vaara (Tuesday) |
Zero, ೦ (sonne), has no planet in this scheme. The planet column follows the convention found in Indian numerology books in the Cheiro tradition, and it is a convention rather than a fixed law: you will meet small variations between practitioners, especially for 4 and 7. The weekday names, on the other hand, are standard Kannada and come straight from the Navagraha pairing of planets and days.
The three numbers: mulank, bhagyank and name number
Indian numerology, whether it is explained in Kannada, Hindi or Tamil, works with three core numbers. The Hindi terms mulank and bhagyank are widely borrowed, so you may also see them on Kannada websites and in astrologers' reports.
Birth number (mulank)
The birth number comes from the day of the month only. Add the digits of the day and keep adding until one digit is left. Someone born on the 14th has 1 + 4 = 5; someone born on the 28th has 2 + 8 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. It is said to describe everyday temperament, the way you come across to others.
Destiny number (bhagyank)
The destiny number, also called the life path number, uses the whole date of birth: day, month and year. Add every digit and reduce to a single figure. Tradition treats it as the broader direction of a life, which is why it often carries more weight than the birth number in a reading.
Name number
The name number converts the letters of your name into values and adds them. Indian practitioners usually rely on the Chaldean chart popularised by Cheiro, in which the values run from 1 to 8 and no letter is given 9. Here is the chart; you will find a fuller explanation on our Cheiro numerology chart page.
| Value | Letters (Chaldean / Cheiro chart) |
|---|---|
| 1 | A I J Q Y |
| 2 | B K R |
| 3 | C G L S |
| 4 | D M T |
| 5 | E H N X |
| 6 | U V W |
| 7 | O Z |
| 8 | F P |
| 9 | No letter |
Because this chart is built on the Latin alphabet, the name number is calculated from the way your name is spelled in English. That one fact explains why two people called the same thing in Kannada can end up with different name numbers. It is also how our free numerology calculator works: you type your name as you spell it in English, along with your date of birth.
Worked example: a Kannada name, two spellings
Take an invented example: a woman named Shwetha, born on 14 August 1995. Her two date-based numbers do not depend on spelling at all.
- Birth number: day 14, so 1 + 4 = 5, linked by convention to Budha (Mercury).
- Destiny number: 1 + 4 + 0 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 5 = 37, then 3 + 7 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1, linked to Surya (the Sun).
The name number is where spelling matters. In English the same Kannada name is commonly written either as Shwetha or as Swetha. The table puts the two side by side, letter by letter.
| Position | Shwetha (Spelling A) | Value | Swetha (Spelling B) | Value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | S | 3 | S | 3 |
| 2 | H | 5 | W | 6 |
| 3 | W | 6 | E | 5 |
| 4 | E | 5 | T | 4 |
| 5 | T | 4 | H | 5 |
| 6 | H | 5 | A | 1 |
| 7 | A | 1 | ||
| Total | 29 → 2 | 24 → 6 |
Spelling A: Shwetha
S (3) + H (5) + W (6) + E (5) + T (4) + H (5) + A (1) adds up to 29. Reduced, 2 + 9 = 11 and 1 + 1 = 2, so the name number is 2, associated with Chandra, the Moon. Some readers also look at the unreduced compound number, here 29, but the single digit is what most charts report.
Spelling B: Swetha — why the total changes
Drop the first H and the total falls by 5 to 24, which reduces to 6, associated with Shukra (Venus). The person is the same; only the Roman letters have changed. The same thing happens with initials. If you sign as K. Shwetha, the way many South Indians put an initial before their given name, the K adds 2, the total becomes 31 and the name number moves to 4.
Which spelling should you use? Most numerologists say: the one you actually use and sign with every day, on documents, email and social media. Want to check your own? Type your name exactly as you spell it in English, along with your date of birth, into the calculator linked above. It works on English letters, so it reads the spelling you really use rather than the Kannada script. If your family writes your name in more than one way, run each version and compare the results, just as we did above.
Katapayadi: the letter-number code written in Kannada script
If you are looking for a way to turn Kannada letters themselves into numbers, there is exactly one well-documented historical system, and it is not a fortune-telling chart. The Katapayadi system is an ancient Indian alphasyllabic numeral code that gives each consonant a digit, so that long numbers can be hidden inside words and verses and remembered easily. Most of the evidence for its use comes from South India, especially Kerala. The oldest known example is Haridatta's astronomical work Grahacaranibandhana, dated to 683 CE, and later astronomers of the Kerala school of astronomy and mathematics used it heavily. The encyclopaedia table for the system sets out the letters in Devanagari, Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam scripts.
The Kannada letter table
The consonants are grouped into four runs that start with ka, ṭa, pa and ya, which is where the name Ka-ṭa-pa-yādi comes from. Here is the full table in Kannada script.
| Digit | Kannada consonants | Romanised |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | ಕ ಟ ಪ ಯ | ka, ṭa, pa, ya |
| 2 | ಖ ಠ ಫ ರ | kha, ṭha, pha, ra |
| 3 | ಗ ಡ ಬ ಲ | ga, ḍa, ba, la |
| 4 | ಘ ಢ ಭ ವ | gha, ḍha, bha, va |
| 5 | ಙ ಣ ಮ ಶ | ṅa, ṇa, ma, śa |
| 6 | ಚ ತ ಷ | ca, ta, ṣa |
| 7 | ಛ ಥ ಸ | cha, tha, sa |
| 8 | ಜ ದ ಹ | ja, da, ha |
| 9 | ಝ ಧ | jha, dha |
| 0 | ಞ ನ | ña, na |
A practical tip if you compare tables online: check the glyphs. As of October 2026, the Kannada column in Wikipedia's Katapayadi table leaves out ba and shows the Telugu form of la, so it is not a reliable copy source. The letters above were checked one by one against their Unicode character names.
The three rules
- Vowels count as zero. A vowel standing on its own, like the opening a- of a word, gives 0, and so do ña and na, as the table shows.
- Only the last consonant of a conjunct counts. In a cluster such as ś + v at the start of the name Shwetha, the first consonant is ignored and only the final one, va, is read.
- Read the digits from right to left. The Sanskrit rule is ankanam vamato gatih, roughly “numbers move to the left”. You note the digits in the order the syllables appear, then reverse them to get the number.
Example: how a raga name encodes its melakarta number
Katapayadi lives on in Carnatic music, the classical music of South India, Karnataka included. The melakarta (parent) ragas are numbered, and the number is built into the first two syllables of each raga's name. Take Dheerasankarabharanam: the first syllable dhī uses ಧ (dha), which is 9, and the second syllable ra uses ರ (ra), which is 2. Written in order that gives 9, 2; read from right to left it becomes 29. Dheerasankarabharanam is the 29th melakarta raga. So a raga's position can be worked out from its name instead of being memorised from a list.
Can you use Katapayadi for name numerology?
Not in any traditional sense. The documented uses of Katapayadi are as a memory aid for astronomy, mathematics, calendars and music. Nothing in the historical record presents it as a method for reading character or predicting events from a person's name. Wikipedia does note that some people today use it when choosing names for newborns, but the sources for that are thin, and it is a modern practice rather than an ancient one.
So any “Kannada letter numerology” result is a modern adaptation. If you want to try it as a cultural exercise, here is what it looks like for our example name. Shwetha begins with the conjunct of ಶ (śa) and ವ (va); only the last consonant counts, so the first syllable gives 4. If the second syllable is written with the dental ತ (ta), as the name commonly is, it gives 6. In order that is 4, 6, and read right to left the Katapayadi value is 64.
Notice how different this is from the Chaldean method. Katapayadi produces a multi-digit number, not a value from 1 to 9, and reducing 64 to 1 would be your own invention, not part of the system. The Chaldean result for the same name was 2 or 6 depending on spelling. The two methods simply measure different things, and neither is a reading of your future.
Meanings of 1–9 in brief
These are the qualities most commonly associated with each number in Indian numerology. They come from the planet linked to the number and are offered as traditional descriptions, not as facts about any individual. For a deeper look at each number in a sister language, see our guide to numerology numbers in Tamil.
- 1 (Surya): leadership, independence and self-confidence; said to be ambitious, sometimes proud.
- 2 (Chandra): sensitivity, imagination and cooperation; said to be gentle but changeable in mood.
- 3 (Guru): learning, teaching and optimism; Guru is the planet of wisdom in Indian astrology.
- 4 (Rahu): unconventional thinking and sudden change; often described as hard-working but restless.
- 5 (Budha): communication, trade and quick thinking; associated with travel and versatility.
- 6 (Shukra): harmony, beauty, the arts and comfort; often linked with family life.
- 7 (Ketu): introspection, research and spiritual interests; said to prefer depth to display.
- 8 (Shani): discipline, patience and responsibility; traditionally linked with slow, steady results.
- 9 (Mangala): energy, courage and drive; said to be generous but quick to anger.
An honest note on numerology
Auravixa explains numerology because many people value it as part of their culture, family practice and self-reflection. Our editorial position is simple: numerology is a belief system and a tradition, and there is no scientific evidence that numbers derived from a name or birth date predict marriage, health, wealth or success. Please do not make important decisions about money, medical treatment, careers or relationships on the basis of a number.
Used in that spirit, numerology in Kannada can be genuinely interesting. It connects everyday things, such as the vaara names on a calendar, the numerals on the Mysore clock tower and the numbering of Carnatic ragas, to a long South Indian history of playing with numbers and letters. Work out your own numbers, compare the Chaldean and Katapayadi methods, and enjoy them as heritage rather than destiny.
Frequently asked questions
What is numerology called in Kannada?
Numerology is sometimes referred to as sankhyashastra, the study of numbers. In practice many Kannada speakers simply use the English word numerology, along with the Hindi-derived terms mulank (birth number) and bhagyank (destiny number).
How do I calculate my name number in Kannada?
Write your name in English as you normally sign it, give each letter its Chaldean value (A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, U=6, O=7, F=8 and so on), add the values and reduce the total to one digit. Shwetha, for example, totals 29, which reduces to 2.
Is there a Kannada letter chart for numerology?
There is no official Kannada numerology chart. The only well-documented system that gives Kannada letters numbers is Katapayadi, a historical memory code used in astronomy and Carnatic music. Using it for name numerology is a modern adaptation.
Which planet rules each number in Kannada numerology?
By traditional convention: 1 Surya (Sun), 2 Chandra (Moon), 3 Guru (Jupiter), 4 Rahu, 5 Budha (Mercury), 6 Shukra (Venus), 7 Ketu, 8 Shani (Saturn) and 9 Mangala (Mars). Practitioners vary slightly, especially for 4 and 7.
Should I use the Kannada or English spelling of my name?
Chaldean numerology works on the Latin alphabet, so use the English spelling you sign with every day. Different spellings, such as Shwetha and Swetha, give different name numbers (2 and 6 in our example).
