Vastu Numerology for Shops and Offices
Key takeaways
- Vastu numerology for a shop or office links the unit number to a ruling planet (Indian numerology) and that planet to a direction and guardian (vastu).
- A commonly cited mapping places the Sun east, Moon north-west, Mercury north, Venus south-east, Mars south, Rahu south-west, Jupiter north-east and Saturn west; Ketu has no direction on it.
- The planet's direction is not an instruction about which way your shop must face.
- Vastu writers disagree on details such as the cash counter: NoBroker fixes it in the south-east, Digit ties it to the shop's facing.
- Both traditions are beliefs; choose premises on practical grounds and treat any reading as a tie-breaker at most.
Vastu numerology for shop and office premises combines two traditions: Indian numerology reduces the premises number to one digit and links it to a ruling planet (1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn, 9 Mars), and Vastu Shastra links planets and directions. Both are belief systems, not science, and neither can promise sales.
This guide is for shop owners, founders and office tenants who have heard that the unit number and the entrance direction "matter" and want one clear explanation. It covers how to reduce a commercial number, which planet and direction each digit is tied to, two worked examples, what popular vastu writers say about entrances and cash counters, and where those writers contradict each other. Auravixa makes free tools; it does not sell vastu consultations, and nothing below is a promise of footfall or profit.
What vastu numerology for shop and office premises means
Vastu Shastra is a traditional Hindu system of architecture. As the Wikipedia overview of Vastu Shastra describes it, the system rests on ancient texts about design, layout, measurement, ground preparation, space arrangement and spatial geometry, and its layouts are drawn on a square grid called the Vastu Purusha Mandala. Numerology is a different tradition: the belief in an occult or mystical relationship between numbers and events. On its own, neither says much about a shop number.
What links them is astrology. Indian numerology ties each digit from 1 to 9 to one of the Navagraha, the nine celestial bodies of Vedic astrology. Vastu writers tie those planets to compass directions, and each of the eight directions has a mythological guardian. Follow the chain and a premises number points to a planet, the planet points to a direction, and the direction has a guardian. That chain is the whole method; the rest is interpretation.
For commercial premises the chain is usually applied to two things: the number on the door (Shop 14, Office 503, Unit 12B) and the direction the entrance faces. Homes use the same logic, and residential numbers are covered in the house number numerology guide, so this page sticks to shops, showrooms and offices and does not repeat the meanings of house numbers 1 to 9.
Layer one: your shop number and its ruling planet
How to reduce a shop or office number
Use the number that identifies your unit, then add its digits until a single digit remains. Office 503 gives 5 + 0 + 3 = 8. Shop 62 gives 6 + 2 = 8 as well. Shop 38 gives 3 + 8 = 11, which is a master number in Auravixa's method (see below) and otherwise reduces to 1 + 1 = 2. If your lease, signboard and GST address show different numbers, decide which one you are reading and stay consistent; a reading of the building's street number and a reading of your unit number are two separate exercises.
Then match the digit to its ruling planet in Indian numerology:
- 1: Sun (Surya)
- 2: Moon (Chandra)
- 3: Jupiter (Brihaspati)
- 4: Rahu
- 5: Mercury (Budha)
- 6: Venus (Shukra)
- 7: Ketu
- 8: Saturn (Shani)
- 9: Mars (Mangala)
Rahu and Ketu are not physical planets. In Vedic astrology they are the lunar nodes, the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's apparent path, yet numerology still treats them as the rulers of 4 and 7.
Numbers with letters and master numbers
Commercial addresses often carry letters: Shop 12B, Unit 4A, Office C-7. Auravixa's house-number method converts the letter with the Pythagorean numerology chart, which gives the Latin letters values from 1 to 9 (A is 1, B is 2 and so on), and adds that value to the digits. The same method reads 11 and 22 as master numbers in two layers before reducing them. Those rules, with examples, are set out in the house-number guide linked above, and they apply to a shop door exactly as they do to a flat door.
A shop also has a trading name, and many owners look at the two together. The free business name numerology tool reduces a business name to its number with the same 1-to-9 logic, so you can see whether the name and the premises point to the same planet or to different ones. Once you have the name number, the brand name numerology guide explains how it is usually read.
Layer two: directions, guardians and planets in vastu
Vastu divides a plot into eight directions, four cardinal and four intermediate. In Hindu mythology each direction has a guardian; the guardians are called the Dikpala, and the set of eight is the Ashta-Dikpala. According to Wikipedia's Dikpala article, Kubera guards the north and is associated with fortune, Yama the south, Indra the east, Varuna the west, Ishana the north-east, Agni (fire) the south-east, Vayu (wind) the north-west and Nirrti the south-west.
The planet layer comes from a separate source. A commonly cited planet-to-direction mapping, published by IIFL in an article on vastu and astrology, places the Sun in the east, the Moon in the north-west, Mercury in the north, Venus in the south-east, Mars in the south, Rahu in the south-west, Jupiter in the north-east and Saturn in the west. Ketu is not on that list. Other writers may assign planets differently; this mapping is used here because it is published and covers eight of the nine numbers.
| Number | Ruling planet (Indian numerology) | Planet's direction (commonly cited vastu mapping) | Guardian of that direction |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sun | East | Indra |
| 2 | Moon | North-west | Vayu |
| 3 | Jupiter | North-east | Ishana |
| 4 | Rahu | South-west | Nirrti |
| 5 | Mercury | North | Kubera |
| 6 | Venus | South-east | Agni |
| 7 | Ketu | No direction on the cited list | Not applicable |
| 8 | Saturn | West | Varuna |
| 9 | Mars | South | Yama |
Read across a row to get the full chain. A unit that reduces to 5 is ruled by Mercury; the cited mapping puts Mercury in the north, the direction of Kubera. A unit that reduces to 6 is ruled by Venus, placed in the south-east, the direction of Agni. These are links between two published maps, not evidence that a number or a direction changes how a business performs.
An important caveat for shop owners: the direction column is where the cited mapping places the planet. It is not a rule that a shop numbered 8 must face west, or that a unit numbered 5 must open to the north. Advice about which way a shop should face comes from separate vastu guidance, covered further down, and the two layers often point different ways. In a mall, market row or office tower, the facing is fixed by the building, so most tenants can only choose between units, not turn one around.
Worked example: reading a shop number with its entrance
The examples below are hypothetical. They show how the method works; they do not rate any real address.
| Premises | Digit sum | Single digit and planet | Planet's direction (cited mapping) | Entrance faces | What the two layers say |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Office 53 | 5 + 3 = 8 | 8, Saturn | West (Varuna) | West | Number and entrance point the same way |
| Shop 25 | 2 + 5 = 7 | 7, Ketu | None on the cited list | North | Number layer gives no direction; facing matches a common shop preference |
| Shop 47 | 4 + 7 = 11 | Master 11, then 2, Moon | North-west (Vayu) | East | Master-number rules apply first; number and entrance point different ways |
Three things the table does not show on its own. For Office 53, the number and the west entrance agree, yet the shop guides summarised below prefer north-, east- or north-east-facing premises, so one layer agreeing does not settle the reading. For Shop 25, the chain stops at Ketu, so only the north entrance (Kubera's direction) carries any vastu meaning. For Shop 47, the master-number rule comes first; the east entrance is Indra's direction and the Sun's, not the Moon's, and a mismatch like this is common rather than a reason to reject a unit.
Whatever planet your number reduces to, the reading is a description within a tradition, not a forecast.
What vastu writers say about shop layouts, and where they disagree
The two published guides below come from a property portal and an insurer. Neither cites a classical text or uses numerology, and they do not agree on the details.
NoBroker's vastu-for-shops guide (updated 5 February 2026) links the north with Kuber (Kubera) and describes the south as less favourable. Its quick-details table names the south-east "Agni" corner, cashier facing north or east, yet another line on the same page says to place the counter in the south-west, opening towards the north or east, and its rules for a north-west-facing shop move the counter to the north-west. Digit's (godigit.com) vastu-for-shops page ties the counter to the shop's facing throughout. The table sets the two side by side.
| Element | Recommendation in one source | Alternative recommendation | What to take from it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash counter | NoBroker: south-east (Agni corner), cashier facing north or east; another line on the same page says south-west, opening north or east | Digit: depends on facing (north-west-facing: north-west corner; south-facing: towards south-east; south-west-facing: south-west) | There is no single rule; even one guide gives two answers |
| Shop facing | NoBroker: north, east or north-east preferred; south less favourable | Digit: entrance side given per facing (north-facing: north side; east-facing: east or north-east) | Both favour north and east; neither gives evidence |
| Owner's seat | NoBroker: south-west, facing north or east | Not covered in the Digit guidance cited here | Treat as one writer's view |
| Heavy storage | NoBroker: south or south-west | No second source cited | Practical needs (loading, safety) come first |
| Premises number | Neither shop guide uses numerology | Number, planet and direction chain (this page) | The number layer is a separate tradition added on top |
The mythology helps explain some of this advice. The south-east is Agni's direction, which is why it is called the fire or Agni zone, and the north is Kubera's, which is why it is linked with wealth. Neither association tells you where a counter will be safest, most visible or easiest to staff, and the classical layout grid, the Vastu Purusha Mandala, was not designed around a modern retail floor plan.
Using it sensibly: limits, sceptics and a short checklist
The classical vastu texts studied today, such as the Mayamata and the Manasara, are treatises on design, layout and measurement. The number-to-planet layer used for shop numbers comes from numerology, a separate tradition, so "vastu numerology" is a modern combination rather than one ancient system.
There are also well-known critics. Wikipedia's Vastu Shastra article records that astronomer Jayant Narlikar said modern vastu consultants' claims have "no logical connection to environment", and that rationalist Narendra Nayak described contemporary practice as superstition presented in the name of science. Numerology itself is described as a belief, not a tested method. If the subject interests you, read it as culture and tradition and keep business decisions on firmer ground.
- Choose premises on practical grounds first: footfall, visibility, rent, lease terms, access, parking and safety.
- If the reading matters to you, use it as a tie-breaker between units that are otherwise equal, not as a reason to take a worse unit.
- Record the number reading and the facing separately; they will often disagree, as the examples above show.
- Where vastu writers disagree, as they do on the cash counter, choose the layout that works for security, staff and customer flow.
- Be wary of anyone who links a renovation, a new nameplate or a paid "correction" to guaranteed sales. Nothing cited here supports that.
- If you are thinking of renumbering or re-lettering a unit, speak to your landlord or building management first; this guide does not cover the legal side.
If you want the name side of the picture as well, check your business name number with the free business name numerology tool and compare it with the premises number you worked out above.
Frequently asked questions
What is vastu numerology for a shop?
It combines two traditions. Indian numerology reduces the shop number to one digit and links it to a ruling planet, and vastu links that planet to a direction and the direction to a guardian deity. It is a belief system, not a proven method, and it cannot guarantee sales.
How do I calculate my shop or office number?
Add the digits of your unit number until one digit is left: Office 503 becomes 5 + 0 + 3 = 8. Letters such as the B in 12B are converted with the Pythagorean chart, and 11 and 22 are treated as master numbers, as explained in Auravixa's house number numerology guide.
Which shop number is lucky?
No number is lucky in any proven sense. Within the tradition, each digit is linked to a planet, for example 5 to Mercury and 8 to Saturn, and readers interpret those planets differently. Use the reading as a cultural tie-breaker at most.
Which direction is best for a shop entrance in vastu?
Vastu writers commonly favour north, east or north-east. NoBroker's guide prefers those facings and treats south-facing as less favourable, while Digit gives entrance advice that depends on which way the shop faces. Sources differ and none offers evidence.
Does vastu numerology have scientific backing?
No. Numerology is described as a belief, and critics such as astronomer Jayant Narlikar have said modern vastu claims have no logical connection to the environment. Treat it as tradition, not science.
